Materials Theory Group

In the week of 24-28 August 2020, the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy held a Joint Online Workshop with the Advanced Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University in Japan.

The Department is home to a Joint Research Center, inaugurated in May 2012 in partnership with Tohoku University. Now in its eighth year, a Workshop was planned with the goal of bringing together researchers from Cambridge and Tohoku to present the latest in research from their respective universities.

Ongoing restrictions necessitated an online format, and to allow for time zone differences between the United Kingdom and Japan, the workshop was split into five 2-hour daily sessions. Each session was dedicated to a different theme:

Energy Devices; Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy; Mathematics, Data Science and Materials; Bio/Soft Materials and Topological Materials.

The workshop programme can be found here.

In total, 26 speakers - 14 affiliated with Cambridge and 12 affiliated with Tohoku - addressed 145 registered participants from 10 different institutions and companies. The majority of participants were from the University of Cambridge and Tohoku University, followed by attendees from the University of Tokyo and University College London.

The workshop organising committee is grateful to all speakers, session chairs and participants for ensuring the smooth running of the workshop. The talks stimulated many great discussions, which we hope will serve as starting points for future collaborations between Tohoku and Cambridge.
